Talking through a video on the Internet
A video chat allows people to see each other and talk to each other in real time through the Internet. You can see the person you are talking to on your computer screen and also hear the person through speakers on your computer. Let's see how to video chat using Google Hangouts.
Open a browser like Chrome, type "google.com" in the address bar and press Enter. In the search bar type "Google Hangouts plugin" and press Enter.
Once found, click the blue button titled “Download Plugin” so that you can use Google Hangouts.
Log onto your Gmail account. If you don't have an account, you can view our tutorial about how to create an email account.
Look for the Google Hangout chat area on the left.
When you see a green line appear under your name or display picture it means you are online. Similarly, a green line under any of your contacts' display pictures or names indicates that they are online.
Click on the name of the person whom you would like to chat with.
If you don’t see a person in the list, you can add a new person by clicking the "New Hangout" box and typing in the email address for the person you would like to do a video chat with.
Once you click on the person’s name, click on the video icon on the left. Google Hangouts will begin a video-call. This is a free service where you will only have to pay for Internet usage charges.
If your friend decides to accept the invitation to join your video call, you will soon see their face and hear their voice.
You can add up to 9 other people to your video chat. To add another person, click the “invite people” button and type the email address of the next person you would like to invite.
